Season 1: TAXI WARS
Taxi Wars, documents the labor struggles of immigrant cab drivers in a changing industry as they fought the rise of uber and demanded better working conditions from the city.
Hundreds of passengers are refused service across the city every year with most of them directed towards outer borough residents who are disproportionately Black/People of Color. The Taxi and Limousine Commission’s latest campaign against taxi ride service refusals asks passengers to report drivers to 311 - but has this approach worked in the past? Julian and Yanny break it down by looking at the last time a taxi ride refusal caused a stir.
In episode one, Carlos and Julian reported on the crisis in the New York City Taxi Industry. They told us about what taxi drivers consider a war over the future of the industry. This is a war between Taxi drivers and app companies like Uber and Lyft. Immigrant communities are on the forefront of this war making up a majority of the driver workforce. On October 1st of 2018, another immigrant driver committed suicide.
WHEN UBER began its campaign to take over New York City’s taxi industry, it promised a bright and prosperous future for tens of thousands of working-class drivers. Instead, the company has created a glut of cars, creating Depression-era conditions that were prime causes in five drivers taking their own lives since January of this year.
